3GPP is currently standardising Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services (MBMS), which will allow resource efficient multicast and broadcast data delivery in UMTS networks. In a beyond 3G scenario, MBMS is expected to be used along side with other interworking access networks such as DVB-H or WLAN. The heterogeneity of networks and receivers in such an environment, however, poses challenges for the multicast delivery. This paper presents a group management support for multicast user services that allows to optimise the delivery in such heterogeneous environment, by carefully coordinating the multicast delivery over multiple access networks. Using predefined policies and various context information of the interested receivers and access networks, the proposed group management support is aware of the current receiver heterogeneity and can determine appropriate flows and delivery paths throughout the lifetime of a multicast session.
