Very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) in plasma of patients with spinocerebellar degeneration were analyzed and compared with those in patients with other neurological disorders or metabolic diseases and healthy controls. The C26 : 0/C22 : 0 ratio as well as the C24 : 0/C22 : 0 ratio in patients with sporadic olivo-pontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) (0.099±0.072; n=14), familial OPCA (0.097±0.039; n=3) and Joseph's disease (0.123±0.085; n=17) were significantly (p<0.05) high compared with healthy controls (0.053±0.026; n=20), suggesting that there is peroxisomal dysfunction reducing the β-oxidation activity of VLCFA in these diseases.
