According to Vygotskian theory learning first occurs on the interpsychological plane, through social interaction, to the intrapsychological plane, within the individual. This study attempts to investigate vocabulary learning within this theoretical framework. Video tapes of three Japanese speaking children engaged in high context and low context English vocabulary activities were analyzed. The results indicate that in the early stages of word learning there is greater output frequency of vocabulary items; and in the later stages of learning, output frequency decreases. This is consistent with Vygotskian theory, which predicts that as knowledge is internalized during instructional activities, it becomes less vocalized, and is represented as inner speech within the individual.
