The Sole reference to Jean-Paul Sartre in all of George Orwell's works is his review of Portrait of the Antisemite (the English translation of Reflection sur la question juive) in the Observer No.7, November 1948, where he criticises Sartre sharply for being nothing but "a bag of wind". Although the review itself is fairly short, Orwell's writings concerning anti-semitism itself amount to at least as many pages as those of Strtre's book. The intention of the present essay is to compare the two writers' respective approaches to the question of anti-semitism. It will be argued that Orwell's typically parochial and practical approach nevertheless achieves a degree of intellectual penetration where Sartre's, which attempts to analyse the question simultaneously on both empirical and philosophical levels, is ultimately, as Orwell himself pointed out, nothing but a "bag of wind".
