There have been few reports of neuroleptanalgesia in obstetric anesthesia. The effect of modified NLA has been studied on the mother and fetus, using Thalamonal with nitrous oxide and oxygen in cesarean sections, and Droperidol and Pentazocine in vaginal deliveries. In the case of cesarean section, intravenous Thalamonal of 0.1ml/kg was quite effective with supplemental usage of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Postoperative analgesic effect was superior to GOF anesthesia. Intravenous Droperidol of 12.5mg followed by intramuscular Pentazocine 30〜60mg showed adequate tranquilizing and analgesic effect with little change of uterine contraction and fetal heart rate. Maternal respiratory depression was not observed in the vaginal deliveries although in C/S 30 per cent decrease of minute volume in five minutes after the anesthesia. Maternal cardiovascular effect was minimal. Neonatal respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic functions were not affected both in abdominal and vaginal deliveries.
