The premature infant at risk for RDS appears to be predictable from prenatal tests on amniotic fluid for fetal lung maturity. The subsequent course of the disease can be modified by minimizing asphyxia during labor and delivery and by appropriate correction of hypoxia and acidosis immediately after birth. Postnatal therapy is aimed at maintaning optimal homeostasis, and providing whatever mechanical respiratory support is necessary until adequate surfactant synthesis can be developed in the infant's lungs.
