Various neuromuscular symptoms are seen frequently in the course of systemic lupus erythematosus and they compose an important part of its symptomatology. Especially frequent are couvulsion, psychosis and stroke. The auther presented a clinicopathological observation of these neuromuscular symptoms and proposed seven different mechanisms through which these symptoms may be produced. They are (i) cerebrovascular disease, (ii) disorder of coagulation and hemostasis mechanisms, (iii) dysfunction of other organs such as kidney, liver, heart and lung, (iv) altered immunological responses to bacterial, fungal and viral infections, (v) side effects of adrenocortical steroid treatment, (vi) abnormal responses to nonspecific stresses, (vii) autoimmunization.
