Because of a falling birth rate and therefore a small number of students, many elementary and junior high schools have surplus classrooms. Effective use of these surplus classrooms could benefit the students' learning environment. Even though some of the surplus classrooms are sometimes used for various activities, remodeling and resizing of classrooms is hardly ever done. Teaching in a classroom of unsuitable size for the number of students causes many problems. Inappropriate furniture is another problem. For the effective use of surplus classroom space, more thought should be given to flexible designs of classrooms where easy carry-in-and-out of furniture is possible and how the furniture itself ought to be.
