• The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of what distance education today involves. In order to help readers better understand today's distance education, we present a general explanation of its origins and background, both in Japan and abroad. Following the general discussion, we examine the role of HIU's distance ed. curriculum within Japanese education, provide the first-hand observations of this writer, and conclude by considering possible future directions for the distance program at HIU.
