It was put in a statutory form for the first time in Japan through the enforcement of the Child Abuse Protection Law on the 20th November 1997 that child abuse causes serious influences on the physical and mental development of the victimized children as well as on the formation of their personality. In the present study, we examined the following two hypotheses which were built from the point of views that maltreatment of children in general inhibits their development and has an effect on their self-esteem; the first hypothesis is that there is a correlation between the degree of achievement of developmental stages and the level of selfesteem, and the second hypothesis is that the inmate children in children care homes have lower self-esteem than the control group. Using the inquiry scales for the developmental stage and for self-esteem, we obtained quantified data and statistically tested them. Consequently, the both hypotheses we built were justified with statistical significances.
