There will be two ways of boiling inception, depending on whether or not vapor nuclei can survive in micro-cavities on a heater surface. The important factors that govern their survival are the wetting of the liquid (contact angles), the shape of the cavities and the presuppression. Little knowledge about both contact angles and shape of micro-cavities has prevented progress of researches for a long time. Very recently, however, the experiments with a heated platinum wire have proved that boiling inception in ethanol is generally caused by spontaneous nucleation. In special situations where the platinum wire continues to be superheatd above an extent throughout the non-boiling period, boiling inception is brought about by a surviving vapor nucleus. It will be needless to say that the explosive growth of surviving vapor nuclei causes boiling inception in water. In addition, smaller vapor nuclei generally tend to collapse easier in ethanol, whereas harder in water. The above results can be attributed to the difference between poorly wetting water and well wetting ethanol.
