To investigate the relationship between head and jaw movements during mastication, Gnathohexagraph and EMG recordings of 10 subjects were taken by focusing on the hardness of masticatory materials. Head and jaw movements in the early phase of jaw closing were quantified in terms of masseter and sternocleidomastoid, muscle activities and in the maximum velocity for jaw closing. The results were as the follows: 1. The ratio of the range of the head movement to that of the jaw movement was constant independent of the hardness of the chewing materials. 2. The ratio of the range of the head movement to that of the jaw closing velocity increased in accordance with the hardness of the materials. 3. During mastication, the masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscle activities proportionally increased in accordance with the hardness of the materials.
