The purpose of this study was to elucidate the influence of adjacent teeth with natural morphology on the three-dimensional accuracy of the bridge die obtained from agar-alginate combined impressions. In this study, three kinds of cartilage type agar impression materials, 3 kinds of alginate impression materials combined with these agar impression materials and one kind of dental stone were used. The metal cast was composed of the original abutment tooth cast, a mounting plate and its fixture. This cast was made from a model of the bridge taking into consideration the estimated defect of mandibular 1st molar while the original abutment tooth cast was tapered by 8 degrees, and the form of cervical margin was chamfered. A model tooth made from the 1st premolar was set on the 2nd premolar proximal side and a model tooth from the 2nd molar instead of the 3rd molar on the 2nd molar distal side. These model teeth were attached and fixed to the cast model using an adhesive resin after determining the attachment site by referring to the anatomical morphology. The impression taking and dental stone manipulation were carried out according to the manufacturer's recommended instructions. One hour after the initiation of the dental stone mixing, the die including mounting plate fixture was removed from the impression and submitted to the determination after 24 hours. The original abutment tooth cast and the die were measured by means of a three-dimensional coordinate measuring system. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The proximal-distal width of the cervical margin of abutment tooth die was significantly reduced by the influence of adjacent teeth. 2. The distance between the outside edge of the bridge abutment teeth was also significantly reduced by the influence of adjacent teeth. 3. Due to the influence of adjacent teeth, the median distance between the two abutment teeth tended to reduce, with the bigger change on the bottom than on the top suggesting an altered tooth axis. 4. The adjacent teeth undercut was seen to have a great influence on the dimensional accuracy of the abutment tooth die. 5. The strength of the adhesivity of agar impression material to alginate impression material was seen to have a great influence on the dimensional accuracy of the impression accompanying adjacent teeth.
