We describe the synthesis and characterization of a new functionalized phthalocyanine 1, directly appended with 2, 3-dibutylpyrazine moieties at the pyrroles. This compound contains extra four metal binding sites, and one of the metal ion receptor has three nitrogens for the complex formation. Significant changes in the UV-vis spectra of 1 in CH_2Cl_2 took place on addition of Pb (OTf)_2, with the colour of solution changing from blue to green. Furthermore, UV titration studies showed 1 : 4 host-guest stoichiometry for complexation with Pb^<2+>. Additionally, large fluorescence quenching effects, characteristic of metal-phthalocyanine complex, was induced selectively by adding Pb (OTf)_2 to phthalocyanine 1. These properties make 1 intriguing candidate for the phthalocyaninebased chemosensor for metal ions.
