It has been said that meals exercise a considerable effect on mental states as well as on the human body. However, there exists no literature of research findings corroborating the premise. This paper takes up the issue under the following three aspects citing past researches. 1) Anomalous mental states are easily manifested due to the amount of sugar intake. 2) A small quantity of food affects mental states; changes are observed not only in physical symptoms, but also in psychological states after one week's exercise of dietary habit. 3) Vegetarian diet improve mental disorders. It is widely accepted in clinical practices that dietetic treatment brings about no curative effect except for the treatment of some physical disorders, while medication is the only way to cure mental disorders. Dietetic treatments have rarely been applied to patients with mental disorders except for fasting, which is occasionally recommended for patients suffering from depression. The present paper reports a case study of a 29-year-old male suffering from depression with severe symptoms of anxiety. It also discusses the legitimacy that the vegetarian diet is efficacious for the treatment of depression or neurosis from the viewpoint of Oriental medicine.
