The aim of this article is to seek how the "theology of the history of religion in Paul Tillich" contributes to reforming the theology of religions. Tillich's thought, which is based on Schelling, a German philosopher, attempts a reinterpretation of his philosophy. Therefore, Tillich's thought on religion stems from Schelling's later philosophy emphasizing the unity and reintegration of the two contraries by grace. Tillilch's theology of the history of religion is a reflection of the belief in the reality of religions and their theological interpretation with a universal code. Insofar as Christian theology is an interpretation of revelation, it has to seek the depth of the religious experience. However, the theological endeavor to interpret religious experience should not exclude the different religious experiences of non-Christian believers, since they are also sincere attempts to seek the ultimate meaning of the human being. The contemporary theology of religions seems to consider dialogue as the unconditional presupposition and goal. But it should be an attempt of believers belonging to different religions to discourse on his or her religious experience with language that is universal and proper to his or her religious experience and reflection. This article discusses this topic mainly in terms of pneumatology in "Systematic theology, vol.3" and "the significance of the history of religion for a dogmatic theologian" from Tillich's works. He, as a Christian theologian, indicates that Jesus as the Christ is the pivot of his spiritual presence and Christian revelation. And aIso Jesus as the Christ shows us the universal ground of religion that is the norm to judge the other spiritual presences and revelations. This understanding of Jesus as the Christ does not prevent the other religious believers from expressing other religious revelations and spiritual presence with their own religious conviction, because Christianity includes the other religions in a mutual immanent way and vice versa. Tillich's "theology of the history of religion" suggests a vision that each of the religions achieves self-transformation by mutual critique and mutual acceptance without losing its own uniqueness as a religion. The religious universal ground and the inner goal enable each religion to achieve this self-transformation. In facing the other religious believers, Christians in the contemporary world have to develop their own theology based on their own religious conviction. Tillich's theological thought on the theology of religions is not a new insight but one of the grounds where theology should remain.
