An Analysis of American and British Business English Idioms

This paper presents an analysis of the differences between commonly used American and British business English idioms. The analysis covered five main themes related to situations that businesspeople encounter : communication; sales and marketing; finance; negotiations; and deadlines. It used published materials as a data source and includes sample conversations, showing how the idioms are used in context. Results showed that 40% of the differences in indicated idiom usage are directly related to the different sports of baseball and American football played in the United States, and cricket plus football (soccer) player in the United Kingdom
