Recently, much literature has been investigating the effects of short-term memory, named working memory, on reading comprehension. Further, individual differences in verbal long-term memory may have predictive power for reading performance. In this article, I reviewed the previous findings about relationships between short-term and long-term memory and reading comprehension. First, several contrasts between short-term and long-term memory were shown by several classic studies. Second, previous studies that investigated the effects of individual differences in short-term and long-term memory revealed that both types of verbal memory affect not only off-line performances, such as recognition, recall, and academic reading tests, but also on-line performances, such as naming latency or reading time. Finally, the importance of testing short-term and long-term verbal memory simultaneously to understand their roles in reading was also discussed.
