This is the second part of a three-part paper which considers the activities and achievements of Christian churches in Nagasaki during Meiji-Period. The main focus here is on Protestantism ; theological education, Christian schools and other organizations in Nagasaki will be dealt with in the next issue, Kwassui Bulletin 48. Section I of this paper will discuss the missionaries who came to Nagasaki before the abolishment of the edict banning Christianity. They were engaged in activities such as church services for the foreign residents, import and sales of Chinese literature, English education, medical services, Japanese language learning and translation, and missionary work which was covertly undertaken. It was not until the abolishment of the edict in 1873 that they were back to their primary role of full-fledged missions of Christianity. Section II will mainly discuss establishment of churches by the Anglican Church, Reformed Church and Methodist Church in the central city of Nagasaki and subsequent developments. Also, it will refer to Baptists, Congregationalists, and Seventh Day Adventists. In addition, Russian Orthodox Church will also be dealt with.
