This study was base on a field survey or case study of 495 house holds, spread over two villages in a cooperative area and two villages in a non cooperative area of Bangladesh. The objectives of this study are to analyse the landholding pattern, sharecropping system and improvement to social and economical conditions of the farmers in the cooperative and non cooperative areas. The findings show that landholding families in both the areas possess very little land. About 47.3% and 38.2% of the total households are landowners in the cooperative and noncooperative areas respectively. The increase in employment is 52.6% incoopera tive and 25.1% in non-cooperative area from 1989 to 1994. The cooperative society generates employment opportunities which creates more employment than in the non cooperative area. The irrigation facilities of the cooperative are better than those in the noncooperative areas because a modern irrigation system has been developed by the society. In the cooperative area the cost of cultivation is less due to the supply of subsidized rate of input by the society. Proper utilization of resources through the coperative society bring benefit to it's members. This cooperative study suggests that the rural area in Bangladesh should be kept under cooperative society and should be guided by a worthy leader to ensure good management.
