Verbal prefixes maki-/makipag- in Tagalog have, among others, been under unsatisfactory linguistic treatment so far. Part of the reason may be ascribed to its intertwined complexities, morphological, syntactic and semantic. This paper focuses on examining in detail the explanations made as to the usage of these derivational prefixes including related prefixes and prepares for a full linguistic clarification to be achieved in the forthcoming paper. In the process special emphasis is given to finding out any kind of distinction among the prefixes in question. We argue, based on the results acquired in the present survey, that the verbal prefixes maki-/makipag- have been treated in following ways: (1) one-sided (2) too simplistic (3) subclassifying (4) converging (5) curious (6) choosing (7) linguistic
