This paper analyzes the meanings and usages of Tagalog potential expressions which can be divided into two types of expressive forms namely: 1) Type I: the one using the pseudo-verbs (modal verbs) like "Puwede/Maaari" and 2) Type II: the potential (potentive) verbs prefixed with "Maka-/Ma-", within a comprehensive framework for the formulation of the whole potential formal system, which the author proposes after the examination of the expressions concerned, considering both semantic and pragmatical meanings. And based on the result of the said analysis, it also tries to resolve the following questions: a) the mechanism of the possible interchangeability among those pseudo-verbs, and between each expressive form of the Type I and the Type II (Maka-/Ma- verbs). b)the semantic and aspectual differences between the "inherent/permanent/prolonged/ repetitive" and "temporary" disability which can be shown in the negative sentences with Maka-/Ma- verbs.
