WAKABAYASHISmall-scale fisheries contribute significantly to food security and income of many people in developing countries. Therefore this study was aimed at outlining the small-scale fisheries of Lake Malombe in Malawi with the overall goal of improving its management consequently improving the livelihood of the fishing communities. Lately fisheries production in the lake has been on the decline. Co-management approach to fisheries management was first initiated around Lake Malombe in 1993 to address this problem. The strategy seems promising for small water bodies although there are some operational processes that are not yet in place including some legal framework. In order for small scale fisheries to be sustainable open access should be replaced with limited access. The organization, composition and sustainability of the local organizations should be carefully considered.
