The purpose of this paper is to identify textual features of written products by tertiary level Japanese students from the perspective of Initial Sentence Elements. Three higt-rated and four low-rated essays were analysed as the data of the present study. The results suggested that conventionalised structures were not evaluated highly in academic creative writings. Some pedagogical implications were discussed in the final section.
