It is well known that the internal stress in castings develops from the difference of temperature of castings in the cooling process of the mould, the resistance of mould and phase transformation. This report represents the results of investigation of how residual stress in castings is related to thermal properties of mould, which I have ever reported. The results obtained are as follows: (1) Residual stress in castings increases in accordance with an increase in hot strength of mould. (2) The greater the variation of wall thickness in castings is, the greater the difference of temperature becomes, that is, the greater the residual internal stress is. (3) The differences of temperature in the cooling process, when a casting specimen of the same size is used, are scarcely influenced by moulds of materials of different thermal conductivity. But higher residual internal stress is produced in the mould of high thermal conductivity material than in that of low thermal conductivity material.
