In this study the static withdrawal resistance of a nail in wood is investigated. The types of nails used were plain-shank nails (CN100, CN90 and CN75) and spirally grooved nails (SN100, SN90 and SN75). The wood species were BEITSUGA, BEIMATSU, HINOKI and SUGI. For measuring the withdrawal resistance, an Amsler type testing machine was used in this study. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) The relation between the diameter of a common nail and the withdrawal resistance is shown in Fig. 1 which is characterized by nearly straight lines within the range tested. In the case of a spirally grooved nail, the relation is not simply proportional (see Fig. 2). (2) The relation between the density of wood and the static withdrawal resistance is shown in Fig. 3-5 for each type of nail. The withdrawal resistance is approximately proportional to the density of wood. (3) The empirical formula is given by P=44.1 ρd - 56.7. (4) The typical load-withdrawal diagram is shown in Fig. 6 which indicates that a spirally grooved nail is remarkably tough in comparison with a common nail.
