The amounts of phosphorus and calcium of human cortical bone (ribs) were determined using atomic absorption spectrometric technique for the Ca content and a modified Fiske-Subbarow method for the P content. Samples were taken from the human ribs of 24 males (30's〜70's) and 22 females (40's〜70's). The amounts of Ca and P of male cortical bone were significantly higher than those of females in the age groups of the 50's and 60's. Ca/P ratios, expressed on a weight basis, were higher for females than for males in their 40's, 50's and 70's. Those data indicate that the ash content of males is higher than that of females, but the crystal structure of cortical bone in females is more likely to be hydroxyapatite when they are over 40 years of age.
