This paper deals with a path failure restoration method, which is called Diversity Coding system, for efficient failure recovery in virtual path based networks. Diversity Coding system uses error correcting codes constructed across logically independent virtual paths. The technique enables a fast recovery, since it can reconstruct failed path data through data processing between receive nodes and it does not need rerouting. The author proposed a segment network formation principle for reducing spare path capacity in Diversity Coding system, and presented a hybrid network structure using both Diversity Coding and switchover type Self Healing. This paper also presented a procedure for restoration message transfer. Performance evaluation by simulation showed that the proposed system had the capability to reduce failure restoration delay with a little increase in spare capacity ratio.
