Recently Mitsui & Chiba (1996. J. theor. Biol. 182, 147-159) and Mitsui et al. (1998, J. theor. Biol. 192, 35-41) have proposed an induced potential model for molecular mechanism of muscular contraction. The present paper aims to supplement the previous papers mainly with mathematical details. Mitsui & Chiba (1996) assumed that an ATP-activated myosin head forms a complex with three actin molecules when it binds an actin filament (three-attached-state model), and explained various experimental data concerning stationary filament sliding and in vitro experiments, while Mitsui et al. (1998) modified this model by changing three actin molecules into two (two-attached-state model), in order to explain the isometric tension and isotonic velocity transients using the same parameter values as the stationary filament sliding. Mathematical details were omitted in the paper by Mitsui et al. (1998), since they were partly similar to those of Mitsui & Chiba (1996) and space available for full description was too much limited. The two-attached-state model has, however, features distinctly different from the three-attached-state model in several respects. Hence some readers may wish to be informed about the details of formulation and calculation supporting the model. From this viewpoint the present paper is published, which contains twenty-one figures about four times as many as five figures included in the paper by Mitsui et al. (1998).
