The effect of mixing conditions on the emulsion polymerization reaction of styrene was studied. The stirring rate was changed in four steps by use of a batch stirred tank reactor. The reaction rate in the zeroth order reaction region decreased with the increase of stirring rate. When the stirring rate was relatively small, it was shown that the reaction rate decreased in the last period of the zeroth order reaction when the tank with baffle plates was used, while this was not the case when the tank without baffle plates was used. These new and unexpected results are discussed and at the same time, influences of other factors of the reactor tank to the reaction rate are described.
