Effects of discharge current and Se vapor pressure on the output power of He-Se laser were investigated experimentally. It was found that the laser output power reached to its maximum value at an appropriate value of the current or that of the Se vapor pressure. Examination of the rate epuation in the light of experimental data reveals that appropriate assumptions make it possible to account for the results obtained. It was also found that the maximum output is due to the excitation of an upper laser level produced by the charge exchange process between He ions and Se atoms at neutral ground state, and that the output reaches its maximum when He ions and Se ions are nearly equal in concentration.
