One of the model engines was completed so as to study scavenging flow of a two-stroke cycle engine as two dimensional flow which is studied visibly, qualitatively and quantitatively. The cylinder of the model is rectangular, and made of colorless and transparent acryl resin. There are several types, of scavenging, but the type in this case is considered one of the most fundamental types concerning two dimensional flow. The method is that the water being put in the cylinder is scavenged by coloured sloution of salt with a certain concentration. "Visibly", in this paper, means 'photographically observed'. "Qualitatively" means comparing scavenging characteristic curve of perfect scavenging and perfect mixing, and moreover observing short circuitting loss and rate of diffusion.' "Quantitatively" means 'considering the volumetric efficiency from the specific gravity and the temperature of the liquid in the cylinder after scavenging action'. For qualitative and quantitative consideration, the previous paper* is available. Each port was opened and shut by a valve without moving a piston. But at the inceptive stage of scavenging action, the turbulence except proper scavenging flow was successfully prevented in and arouud the port. The appearance of flow was successively photographed and observed. The nearer to the exhaust port the scavenging port, the more the short circuitting loss. According to experimental results, it was found that there exists functional relation between the delivery ratio and the volumetric efficiency. In the previous report, either in or k was assumed as 1 in the process of making scavenging characteristic curve, and it was found that this assumption is nearly in accordance with the fact observed in the case that the scavenging port and the exhaust port are separated. The investigation will be continued hereafter, because it is considered very difficult to get the decisive conclusion about scavenging flow only by the present experiments.
