The Practical Handbook for Elementary School English Activities published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology states that English activities at pubic elementary schools should focus on spoken English and that, during the elementary school stage, it is important to separate spoken and written English, with instruction focussing only on spoken English. However, in actual teaching situations, fifth and sixth grade students are curious to learn how to read English. In recent studies, many researchers assert that we should not be too hesitant to teach the alphabet or phonics to elementary school students. This paper intends to give some ideas as to how to introduce the sounds of English to Japanese elementary school students.
