Diffusion of xenon captured in graphite by fission recoil has been studied over the wide range of fission product concentration in graphite. The release of xenon from graphite could not be interpreted by a simple diffusion model, but was controlled by fission-fragment-induced defects where fission xenon was trapped. The chemical state of fission iodine released from ceramic materials has also been investigated by using thermochromatograph. It became clear that fission iodine diffused out of ceramic materials was not elementary iodine, but was iodide of fissile material.
