The purpose of this study is to clarify the thought of 'light gymnastics' which G. A. Leland introduced into Japanese schools. And it also focussed on how the theory of physical education at Amherst College was adopted in Taiso-denshuujo (the National Normal School of Gymnastics). The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1) The theory of physical education at Amherst College based on Christian view of man and his or her body. At the same time the idea of the freedome of the body was found in the view. 2) However, when the theory was brought into Taiso-Denshuujo since 1879, both the Christian view and the idea of the freedom were lost while the recognition of the relat ionship between body and mind and the value of exercises as a means of maintaining of health of students were accepted to build up the theory of light gymnastics. 3) The system of light gymnastics, thus, had the problem of voluntary involvement, and, as a rasult, it was about to be pushed away by Heishiki-taiso (the military exercises) which was later introduced into schools.
