The term "amateur" is an ethical word, and it implies purity, fair play, good sportsmanship, honesty, a love of sport for its own sake, and a lack of commercialization. Especially, the problem of a lack of commercialization occused the serious problem in the '88 Seoul Olympic Games. This is divided into two phenomenon : the acceptance of professional sportsman into the biggest Games and commercialization of the play. In our function-preferenced society, we are living in an unprecedented society that is constantly changing. This is also recognized that the distinction between "amateur" and "professional" be meaninglfully considering the confused social and political circumstances in our contemporary society. Especially, one of problems is the right of elite sportsmen in their sporting life such as "Broken Time Payment". For better or worse, the modern Olympic Games have developed into an institution of international importance and have helped shape our conception of contemporary sport. The author also pointed out the urgency of Olympic reform from the view point of sportsman's ethical problem, but the future of the biggest sport event is clearly uncertain. This comes from the phenomenal growth in size and popularity of the Olympic Games, particulary since World War II. (Res. J. Phys, Educ., Chukyo Univ., 30, 1-10, 1988)
