After the passing of some years which were needed for the excitement of World War II to die down, the world has experienced a big transfiguration, one which occurs just once in several hundred years. This transfiguration began with advanced nations such as U.S. and Western Europe. This big transfiguration, yet continuing today, reminds us of big events which occurred in Europe from the 14th to the 16th centuries, such as the Renaissance, the Reformation, the astounding development of science and technology, geographical discoveries, and the commercial revolution (to which succeeded modern capitalism). In the background of this actual big transfiguration, there has been a population explosion and general recognition of the finiteness of the earth. Also, an epoch-making advance of science and technology, and the birth of the new order which should be named "knowledge-based new capitalism (Chihonshugi in Japanese)" has occurred. At the bottom, there exists the regret and the hate of two world wars and dictatorship, and the fear of the possible extinction of the human race by a nuclear war. On the other side, there has been joy from the release from World War II and expectations of a restoration and progress based on the respect of humanity as well as the quest of full development of human beings. As concrete examples of this big transfiguration, we may name the generalization of "mass" democracy and liberalism, big changes in our daily lives, the universalization of the respect of human rights, as well as the multiple-ization of the power structure, diversification of international relations including the North-South problem, and Globalization plus the growth of the idea of one human race community. Putting them together, I would call this "The New Renaissance". In the days of the Renaissance and the Reformation, the egos of human beings were liberated from subordination to the Lord God and the Catholic Church. In the modern era, especially in the contemporary period when Imperialism and autocratic nationalism flourished, sovereign states became new gods and their governments new churches. But, starting with the New Renaissance, citizens are experiencing a new emancipation of humanity. In other words, the sovereign states-capitalism system which had become the modern world system since the Peace of Westphalia (treaty) of 1648 is now shaking. (see the following chart)
