This paper examines the validity of certain types of test items which TOEFL candidates can expect to encounter on the test. The analysis addresses the issues of native vs. non-native proficiency, grammar vs. style, and the problem of short-term memory with regard to the TOEFL listening comprehension section, as well as the question of whether the TOEFL is actually a language proficiency test, or a test of secondary linguistic (learned) knowledge of English. The item analysis, which is based upon the TOEFL Sample Test, reveals several problems : points of grammar are confused with elements of style ; the effective time range of short-term memory retention may be exceeded on certain items ; various items require extra-linguistic skills ; and TOEFL testees are expected, on certain items, to perform as well--or better than--native speakers. TOEFL candidates need especially to concentrate their studies on matters of style as opposed to grammar, and should place particular emphasis upon recall of lengthy listening comprehension items.
