H.D.Thoreau (1817-1862) and Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) have the same background to enable them to;attain mysticism-the union of nature and self. They both practiced stoicism and confronted nature to seek the genuine truth of the universe. Their understanding of and affection for nature exerted a remarkable influence on their thoughts and lives. In this recognition itself, they differed from each other, yet the processes by which they realized the relationship between the divine and self were similar. In those processes, they both came to achieve fellowship and sympathy with all creatures in the natural world. Neither did they, in the long run, engage in any criticism of existing religion nor espouse exclusive belief in any faith. Also, they are similar in their life theories to establish their points of view, expressed in Japanese as Ichinen-Sanzen "one world at a time". The images they gained through their simultaneous mystical experiences inspired them to live at the moment caused and effected by the natural Law, so they lived their daily life earnestly. Lastly, differences occurred in their final understanding of the dark phase in the natural world and the divine. With the main focus on the relationship between self and others in nature, the topic of ecology and mystical experiences will be developed in the last part of this paper.
