Iwate Prefecture lies in the cold region and is geographically divided into the coast area and the inland area. The life of the people is often influenced by various natural seasonal conditions. In particular, "Yamase", the wind which blows from the coast to the inland area, is a peculiar weather condition and it not only influences the growth of the crops but also obliges people to change their lifestyle. In "A Study on the Progress in the Energy Saving Performances of Houses" from 1998 to 2000, a close relation among living environment, eating habit and clothing habit was found. As for the relation between living environment and clothing in winter, in particular, it was proved that people were satisfied with their clothing habit though they were complaining about the coldness in their houses and that the amount of one' s total clothes is large in the areas with high outdoor temperature and small in the areas with low outdoor temperature. Therefore, it can be said that the higher outdoor temperature is, the lower temperature is kept indoors. The difference of clothing between areas was not seen in summer in Iwate Prefecture, but the study showed that the clothing life is actually influenced by seasonal indoor environment. The following study focused on the relation between clothing and living environment. Temperature and humidity in the houses were measured continuously and the amount of the clothes people wear in the houses, clo value and the amount of sweat in the clothes were measured every one hour. The result shows that in winter, if the temperature difference between outdoors and indoors (and also temperature in the clothes) is made small, the heat radiation becomes little but the measurement of the amount of sweat showed that the large amount of clothes causes disorder of the environment in clothing even in a comfortable living environment. Furthermore, much sweat in clothing, which causes "feeling wet" is seen in summer and it suggests that the further study on the relation among clothing environment, living environment and clothing is needed. On the basis of the results of the former studies, a survey on the actual clothing condition was made in this study and the measurements of the amount of clothing through a year are expected to give us some suggestion about clothing fit for each season. The result showed that the number and the weight of the clothing the students wear tend to increase from the latter half of September and that they are directly proportional to clo value and inversely proportional to outdoor temperature. This suggests that it is desirable for people in Iwate Prefecture to prepare their winter clothing in the middle of September.
