It has been pointed out in recent years that entrenched gender consciousness is unconsciously built into the present structure of school education. In particular there is still a biased consciousness that home economics is a subject for girls, despite its having become a common subject for boys and girls. In this research we assume this situation arose due to the fact that home economics teachers are predominantly female. We aimed to investigate the current status of male home-economics teachers and their educational influences, with a hypothesis that the gender-biased image of home economics could be eliminated by male teachers giving home economics classes. Our research revealed the following result. (1) A quantitative study of the present circumstances shows the rate of male home economic teachers is only a few percent. (2) Interviews with male teachers specializing in home economics clarified that they have characteristic influences that female teachers do not have and their presence may provide an opportunity for leading students to a gender-equal way of living. (3) A consciousness survey of junior-high students who learned home economics from male teachers showed that the classes had the effect of enhancing their consciousness on gender-equal education.
