The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of interaction in groups and gender differences on group performance. The same sex pairs (64 men, 64 women) participated in a paper folding task coactively or collectively. During the experimental sessions, half of them were allowed to talk with the partner and see each other (interactive condition) and the others were forbidden to talk and could not monitor the partner's progress of working (no-interactive condition). Only main effects were statistically significant: (1) when working coactively, participants worked harder compared with when they work collectively; (2) female participants showed higher performance than male participants; and (3) the participants in the no-interactive condition outperformed those in the interactive condition. The results demonstrate that both men and women show the social loafing effect not only in the no-interactive groups but also in the interactive groups.
