The use of corpora has made significant contributions to the compilation of learners' dictionaries of English in recent years. Among them are no doubt more accurate descriptions of the uses and meanings of words and phrases. However, there seem to remain problems in such areas as descriptions of less frequent linguistic items (in corpora) and the treatment of shades of meaning of a word, which may pose difficulties to corpus analysis/lexicography. Four such problems are pointed out and possible suggestions are made in this note. These points are: (1) the explanation of expressions of saying goodbye, (2) the treatment of the transitivity of rummage, (3) the description of the meanings of the nominal use of pigeonhole [pigeon-hole], and (4) the description of one of the meanings of the verb produce, i.e. 'show or present something'.
