This paper investigates the dynamics of desire in contemporary society, by regarding the increase of "borderline", a mental disorder, as a symptom of the trend of contemporary society. By referring to studies by two Japanese psychiatrists, the characteristics of the borderline existential state are suggested. They consist of three points: firstly, the avoidance of structural, systematic and normative properties; secondly, absorption in a world which consists of energy that deviates from the structural; and thirdly, yearning for dyadic relationships bare of roles and norms, but suffering as a result of such relationships. The spread of the borderline existential state has been caused by the fact that the development of a desire for recognition in contemporary society weakens symbolic order and raises desire for consummatory action. Under such circumstances, increased desire for an awareness of responsibility is desirable.
