The aims of this study are: 1) a comparison of stressed and unstressed syllables as a timing factor of English produced by subjects between the pre-test (Tl) and the post-test (T2) (at the beginning of and at the end of the programme respectively) and 2) other comparisons of the results of Tl and T2 each with five groups of subjects mentioned below. Stressed and unstressed syllables will be investigated with respect to duration. The durations of stressed and unstressed syllables gradually shortened from B (Beginners: 1^<st> year high school students) to M (Intermediate Japanese learners of English: 6 adults and 4 college students), from M to A (Advanced Japanese learners of English: 3 lecturers and 7 instructors of English), from A to N (Native speakers of English), and from Tl to T2 with thirty subjects of Maizuru National College of Technology (divided into three groups of 10 members - X: 1^<st> year students, Y: 3^<rd> year students and Z: 5^<th> year students). Shortening of syllables has to be performed through the use of proper weak forms: the shorter the durations of syllables become, the more weakened (reduced) forms have to be used in order to form English speech rhythm. We conclude that practice lessons for English rhythm timing are effective and necessary for Japanese learners of English if their pronunciation is to improve.
