University English instructors sometimes lament the lack of progress by many of our students, but we need to go beyond such complaints to look at what factors may be holding students back. In this paper, I report on the results of a survey and on my observations as a learner and teacher regarding the vocabulary learning strategies of Japanese high school and college students. In particular, an over-reliance on repetitive writing for memorizing vocabulary reflects misunderstandings among students about how languages are best learned. I then present the "key-word" method as an alternative way to memorize new words more effectively.
