It is generally understood that Singapore-one of the world's smallest city-states- is highly developed in industrial and economic terms but has little or no natural resources. This paper explores three of Singapore's 'anxieties', problems that might endanger its future : first, its dependence on Malaysia (its nearest neighbor) for about half of its daily water needs ; secondly.its long stressed emphasis on English-centered education as a means towards rapid economic, social and political progress has meant that such things as art, literature and history have been disregarded ; thirdly, and resulting from the second point, children in Singapore regularly complain of having no 'childhood' (e.g.no time for play). It is only thirty-five years since the establishment of Singapore as a nationstate, during which time it has largely been developed following the model of Japan's post-war economic policies under the policies known as " Look East". However, Singapore is now in a period of transition and there is no way of knowing what future path it will take. It will have to learn and progress by trial and error.
