School sports festivals began with "Kaigun-hei-gakuryo" in 1874. They were highly competitive under the influence of the Navy. The main events were footraces, triple jump, high jump, and so on. After World War II, school sports festivals changed into more simple competitions. The main events were skipping races, centipede races, dances, and so on. After the Tokyo Olympic Games, mass calisthenics were in vogue. In the '69-'70, the main principle of school sports festivals changed from competition to recreation and enjoyment. Especially the Kansai district showed a marked trend toward "Byodo-undokai", compared with Kanto practice. Recently school sports festivals aim at fun and safety first. This Research Note tries to report on the present situation and possible future of school sports festivals seen from the perspective of college students. Many opinions support the idea of giving thoughtful consideration to make school sports festivals more competitive.
