Warehouses first developed at the riverside ports along the Aji river and then were relocated to the old port area in the Minato district. Ensuing formation of the new port in the Suminoe district resulted in a large concentration of warehouses therein. That is to say, the warehouses went through three stages of locational change. Major items stored are foodstuff, paper, iron & steel, and machinery, of which iron & steel is Osaka Port's specialty. Originating abroad, stored items are distributed mainly to the Kansai area, western Japan, Osaka as well as nationwide. Discontinuation of warehousing is most conspicuous in the Minato district, because many warehouses there are old; a considerable number of them are relocated to the new Suminoe district adjoining thereto.
