This paper examines whether the cognitive processing of lexical items and text comprehension in L2 are influenced by the transfer of L1 orthographic cognitive processing strategies. The subjects were Chinese learners of Japanese whose L1 orthography is logographic (Chinese characters) and Korean learners of Japanese whose L1 orthography is phonographic (Hangul), but who also have some knowledge of Chinese characters in L1. In experiment 1, in which the subjects were presented with words visually, and responded to the meaning of the words in their L1, both the Chinese subjects and Korean subjects showed excellent understanding of word meanings. In experiment 2, in which phonological information was presented and subjects were instructed to respond with the meaning of the words in L1, the performance of the Korean subjects was significantly better than that of the Chinese. These results suggest that Korean subjects are able to utilize both orthographic and phonological information relatively effectively while Chinese subjects depend more heavily on orthographic information, causing deficiencies in lexical processing from phonological information.
